GETTING STARTED

After holding many garage sales, we were left with a lot of unsold books and The Library had surplus discarded books, which they sold once a month. We saw this as an opportunity for a new fundraiser. In 1996,Mary Pigden offered us the use of her vacant house on Durham Street. We opened the doors on July 1st of that year and operated only on weekends in the summer months.

The shop was staffed by volunteers and members, doing a two hour shift each. Noreen Alexander, who was a Board Member and liaison person for the F.O.L. at the time, hung some of her paintings there, which we sold on commission. We also had two keen gardeners decorate the front of the house with potted plants, which were also for sale. Since that time, we have always had a book shop operating in many different locations.

In 2003, we were still searching for a shop front and were operating out of the lower level of the library. Eric Hailstone offered us the free use of his shop on Durham Street with the proviso that we were to remain open all year round. This was a challenge for us and we quickly called a special meeting to decide if were felt ready to do this. Never a group to back away from a challenge and realising how much more we would be able to achieve for the library, we accepted Eric’s offer. We opened there on August 3rd and now have a very successful, high profile business on the main street of Madoc, open every day throughout the year.

We have had customers visiting from many parts of Canada and the States, but it’s the local community that really keeps us going. They are also the people who donate all the books. With free premises, free books and volunteers, all we spend running the shop is for cleaning supplies and paper products. This leaves everything else to be spent on the library. So far this year we have donated over $7,00.00.
